I do agree that the dragon could indeed be a later addition. The point for me is rather that the snake/dragon is a symbol of something. This could be injustice and evil. St George fights this and helps us fight it too.
We are confused as to how to engage with the change that is happening around us. The church for instance should use technology for the benefit of the members of the church rather than for individual gratification.
The issue therefore is not just that yesteryears luxuries have become today's needs but that we have been caught up in a maze of money, power and authority. St. George offers us an alternative.Fr. Even those who have taken vows to renounce the world seem unable to avoid it. Two generations ago, cars, home appliances, telephone, etc., were luxuries. TV, mobile phones, etc., were unknown - today these are all necessities. To maintain an average existence demands much. A larger world population competes for scarce resources. Simple pleasures of life are forgotten. Man now claims to have created life; yet he squanders what has been bestowed upon him as a divine gift.

The inexorable advancement of man's material progress is a juggernaut that leaves him spiritually diminished. We are constantly in the pursuit of an ever-elusive happiness. True joy, however, is a divine gift that is obtained through a vastly different pursuit - something we have to keep reminding ourselves and our children constantly.

Thanks for your blog!

PS: The ancient Greek and Syriac Acts of St. George depict him killing a snake. The dragon myth likely comes from the Greek word 'drakon' applied to the Persian King Dadianus, his persecutor, and popularized by Western crusaders.
